Gemma's Walk for Hope 2023 for Tommy's charity

My story starts back in 2020 when I experienced an early miscarriage at 7 weeks. With no support from health services for this miscarriage we just had to carry on. In 2021 we fell pregnant with Juno, but unfortunately my waters broke prematurely at 19 weeks due to cervical incompetence and we had to make the tough decision to medically terminate due to it being so early and being fair to Juno. On the 10th of august we delivered Juno. We had cuddles with Juno and were absolutely gutted and sad to lose our perfect little marshmallow. In 2022, we fell pregnant with Phoebe, a little more scary this time, anxiety was through the roof. We had a cervical stitch placed at 17 weeks due to my cervix being only 16mm long which hopefully would stop my waters breaking early. However at 20 weeks my waters broke due to infection. Again we had to make that devastating decision to medically terminate. We held Phoebe and watched the office with her after delivering her on the 17th of September. Our perfect little panda cub was up in the clouds with Juno. At this time we reached out to Professor Shennan to see if he can help us with a placement of a trans abdominal cerclage. Basically a stitch at the bottom of my uterus and the top of my cervix. He and his team was amazing and I had that placed in December 2022. In February 2023, we fell pregnant with Mikey. Our little ice hockey player. It was a turbulent pregnancy throughout. I bled the whole way through, and had multiple admissions to Hillingdon Hospital for observation. Prof Shennan monitored me the whole time from Tommys, with updates from Hillingdon and clinic appointments. Unfortunately on the 14th of June we thought my waters had broke. I was transferred to Tommys where Prof Shennan and his team reviewed me. Mikey was still alive and kicking and my waters hadn’t broken. They wanted me to stay with them for monitoring. 2 hours later at another scan we heard the devasting words of there is no heartbeat. We had lost our third baby. Our precious Mikey. Prof Shennan and Dr Megan Hall looked after me so amazingly well. Due to my bleeding I had to have an emergency C section. At this point they discovered I had been suffering from a placental abruption. Basically my placenta came away from the wall. Mikey had passed away peacefully and pain free in my tummy. I had lost a lot of blood and had a big recovery and some blood transfusions. The whole time Prof Shennan and Dr Megan visited and I was supported by the bereavement midwife Hannah and cared for by the midwives on the labour ward at Tommys. Everyone was amazing and if it wasn’t for them and the Tommys Charity I wouldn’t have been able to receive the treatment and care that they have given.

I am taking part in the first event Walk for Hope event this October for pregnancy charity Tommy's. I will be raising money to make pregnancy and birth safer, and save babies' lives. Please help and donate to a very special charity which is so close to my heart.

I will be walking in memory of my special babies, Juno, Phoebe and Mikey. And let’s not forget my first miscarriage little raspberry.
